CalMatters Op-Ed: Washington, We Need Every Dollar of Housing Aid

As federal negotiations around the Build Back Better package continue, a historic commitment of $327 billion towards housing is at risk of being significantly cut back. In an op-ed for CalMatters, our Founder and Advisor Carol Galante and Barry Zigas of Zigas & Associates argue it would be a critical error to miss this opportunity not only to expand much-needed funding to our housing system but also to advance a comprehensive approach that tackles the obstacles and policies that have constrained housing supply and access to opportunity.
Drawing on the lessons from the Terner Center’s proposed federal policy framework Building a Better Ladder of Housing Opportunity in the United States, the op-ed asserts that the federal government must push forward a complementary strategy that combines demand-side subsidies with investment in housing production and rehabilitation.
