Housing Leaders Issue Call for Alternatives Before Rent Control Measure Goes to Ballot

Today, the Terner Center is joining with other housing organizations to urge state leaders to push for a solution that will protect renters and avoid a costly fight over the ballot box initiative to repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act this November.

As tenants continue to struggle to keep pace with rising housing costs, real reform is long overdue. However, we believe that neither of the options that may be presented to voters this fall as part of the Affordable Housing Act initiative will effectively resolve the housing challenges California renters face, and we believe there is still time to find a better solution.
Building upon our recent brief―which was released in May and identifies potential policies that would protect renters and expand the supply of affordable housing―the Terner Center has joined with several groups to call on both sides of this debate to come to a consensus on real reform that would avoid the ballot initiative fight.
