Past Event: Cities in the Age of Trump – A Panel Discussion

PANELISTS:

Prudence Carter​ is the Dean of the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley, with former teaching assignments at Stanford and Harvard.  Dr. Carter’s primary research and teaching agenda focuses on causes of and solutions to enduring social and cultural inequalities among social groups, especially in education and schooling. Her expertise ranges from issues of youth identity and race, class, and gender, urban poverty, social and cultural inequality, the sociology of education and mixed research methods. Specifically, she examines academic and mobility differences shaped by the effects of race, ethnicity, class, and gender in U.S. and global society.

Fred Blackwell, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation was former Assistant City Administrator for the City of Oakland. He was responsible for community and economic development; parks and recreation; select public works functions; human services; libraries; liaison to museum services; and community relations, including supporting public safety initiatives. He was also the director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) since 2007, where he oversaw housing, economic development, and infrastructure investments in the city’s eight project areas. Before joining SFRA, Mr. Blackwell was the director of the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Community Development, focusing on economic and service-focused strategies to meet the needs of San Francisco’s low-income families and neighborhoods.

Carol Galante, is the I. Donald Terner Distinguished Professor in Affordable Housing and Urban Policy and the Faculty Director of the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley. She also co-chairs the Policy Advisory Board of the Fisher Center of Real Estate and Urban Economics. Preceding her appointments at UC Berkeley, Galante was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as the Assistant Secretary for the Housing/Federal Housing Commissioner at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Prior to her appointment at HUD, Galante served as CEO of BRIDGE Housing.

Gabriel Metcalf is the president and CEO of SPUR. He is responsible for defining the overall vision and strategy for the organization and has led SPUR through a major expansion of its work.Gabriel has authored or co-authored such notable articles as “The Northern California Megaregion,” “Democracy and Planning,” “The San Francisco Exodus” and “The Great Dithering.” He is also the author of Democratic by Design: How Carsharing, Co-ops, and Community Land Trusts are Reinventing America (St. Martin’s Press, 2015). A co-founder of City CarShare and the San Francisco Housing Action Coalition, Gabriel serves on numerous boards and commissions.

MODERATOR:

Jennifer Wolch is the Dean of the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design. Wolch is a scholar of urban analysis and planning. Her past work focused on urban homelessness and the delivery of affordable housing and human services for poor people. She has also studied urban sprawl and alternative approaches to city-building such as smart growth and new urbanism. Her most recent work analyzes connections between city form, physical activity, and public health, and develops strategies to address environmental justice issues by improving access to urban parks and recreational resources.
