Doug Shoemaker, a Terner Center Affiliate, works at the intersection of affordable housing, community development, and health to advance projects and policy that improve the lives of lower-income people and communities. Doug recently stepped down as President of Mercy Housing California (MHC), where he served as President for 13 years. During his time at MHC, the nonprofit organization built over 6,000 affordable homes and entitled another 3,500 homes that are in development.
Prior to Mercy Housing, Doug served as the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD), San Francisco’s housing finance and community development agency. Doug served previously for five years as Deputy Director of the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California (NPH) and began his career at Mission Housing Development Corporation in San Francisco.
Doug is currently engaged in a mix of activities. He is teaching at his alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley in the Department of City and Regional Planning. His consulting work has focused on housing and health care projects for nonprofits and public agencies. Lastly, Doug serves on the Board of the Mission Asset Fund, the Sunnydale HUB, and an emerging nonprofit focused on engaging young adults in the history of California communities.
